Southwind at Spearville proudly introduced its new Apartment Living wing to the community through a public Open House held on February 12.
Established four years ago, Southwind at Spearville opened as a state-of-the-art skilled nursing and assisted living facility. In July 2024, Administrator Megan Humke joined the leadership team and conducted a thorough assessment of the needs of Spearville and the surrounding communities. Her evaluation revealed that, while assisted living services remain valuable, the greater demand in the area is for skilled nursing and long-term care. Faced with the dual challenge of attracting potential residents to fill available beds and better meet the evolving needs of current assisted living residents, Ms. Humke and the Board of Directors developed a strategic solution. They pursued the necessary licensing and operational changes to transition the entire facility to operate under its skilled nursing license. This transformation enables all 28 beds to provide services eligible for coverage under Medicare, Medicaid, and most long-term care insurance plans. Effective January 1, 2026, Southwind at Spearville successfully completed this transition, becoming a fully licensed 28-bed skilled nursing and long-term care facility. The community now features a dedicated Apartment Living wing, which operates on a level-of-care payment model. This innovative approach accommodates residents requiring varying degrees of support—from minimal assistance with daily activities to comprehensive full-time care—while allowing them to remain in the same apartment as their needs change over time. Residents' level of care is formally reassessed every quarter, and rehabilitation and restorative services are available across all 28 beds. In addition, Southwind at Spearville has recently earned a prestigious 5-Star Overall Rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), placing it among the highest-performing facilities in quality of care. Located at 102 Pine St. in Spearville, Southwind invites the public to call (620-385-2161) or stop by for a tour. You may visit our website at www.southwindatspearville.com.
